11 Killed as Police, Boko Haram Clash Again in Borno
« on: June 08, 2011, 03:14:40 AM »
AT least 11 people were killed in multiple blasts and targeted attacks orchestrated by feared radical Muslim sect, Boko Haram, in Maiduguri, Borno State, police said on Tuesday.

Nigerian Tribune reports that multiple bomb explosions rocked various parts of the town shortly after the new governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, went round the metropolis to inspect some projects.

Governor Shettima had paid a visit to the newly-inaugurated state House of Assembly, the Baga Fish Market and the Musa Usman State Secretariat, which is very close to the Catholic Cathedral of St Patrick's Church, one  of the spots of the explosions.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Borno State Police command, ASP Lawal Abdullahi, who spoke with newsmen by phone, said the bomb blast also hit Dandal Divisional police station, while the Gwange police station was also said to have been attacked.

In the exchange of gunshots which went for almost an hour, three members of the Boko Haram sect were reportedly killed, while two persons were also said to have been hit by stray bullets.

But agency report quoted the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abubakar as saying that 10 people died after members of the Boko Haram detonated bombs at two police stations and at St. Patrick’s Church on Tuesday afternoon in Maiduguri. Ten people died in the attacks, including three suspected sect members and a soldier, he said.

According to AP report, the multiple blasts came a day after motorcycle-mounted gunmen shot dead Sheik Ibrahim Birkuti, a cleric from a rival sect. The police also blamed Boko Haram for killing the cleric on Monday at his home in the town of Biu, south of Maiduguri.

At the time of filing this report, gunshots continued unabated in some places, as many people scurried to take shelter in their homes, even as security operatives had cordoned some of the major streets in the capital.
